Global Engagement

The world of today is facing many devastating problems and something needs to be done about it. One way of starting off is to become globally engaged. Bud Rock, Vice President for Global Engagement at Arizona State University stated that everyone “needs to be aware.” Being globally engaged not only benefits those that are being helped but those that are doing the helping. In this case global engagement is not about personal benefits, but about solving the problems the world is facing. Global engagement is important among college students because it advances the frontiers of knowledge, it will create security, and because the students will gain knowledge of other cultures.

To start off, students should be globally engaged because it will advance the frontiers of knowledge. Dealing with the problems the world is forcing people to come up with new ideas and/or inventions. It would motive people to come up with new solutions and it would create entrepreneurs as well. For instance, coming up with new solutions forms competitiveness with those who are going for the same goal, therefore, creating better technology to help those in need. Global Engagement could make every aspect of life, such as technology and education better, as long as people take the initiative and do something to help the cause.

Next, global engagement will create security around the world. We interact with people from different backgrounds and different cultures and that alone builds relationships that will grow. Also, being globally engaged will make the world a safer place because people are striven to make this world a better and safer place, therefore the people living in this world will be secure. Secure from things such as global warming or anything that is threatening Earth.

Lastly, with global engagement, student gain knowledge of other cultures. Global engagement enables people to be open around people from different cultures and understanding those people. Before anyone does anything to benefit anyone, they must understand the type of people they are working with. Because if they are doing it to help those people, they must learn what will make their way of living better.

Being globally engaged is important if we plan to change the outcome of this world. The world is facing many problems and we are the solution. The only way to do this is to come together with people that have different views and perspectives and work together to come up with a solution. So go out there and do something that this world can benefit from.

Entrepreneurship and Creativity

Entrepreneurship is not just something that people are born into; entrepreneurs make their own path towards the future. The world of today is calling for people to come up with ideas that would benefit this world socially or economically. Donald F. Kuratko and Richard M. Hodgetts wrote in their article titled Entrepreneurship: A Contemporary Approach, “Entrepreneurism is now one of the most sought after disciplines to be learned within our educational systems.” There is a high demand for entrepreneurs and people need to take time and create a new venture, but first they must now how to become one. To be a successful entrepreneur, people need to take risks, be proactive, and let their passion drive them.

A great entrepreneur takes risks. Not every entrepreneur out there is rich, therefore, those who are seeking to be an entrepreneur have to make the sacrifice of investing their money towards what they plan to achieve. Although in reality, investing that money would not be a sacrifice because that money is going towards a good cause. Entrepreneurs also take the risk of whether their plan will actually work. For instance, if an accountant creates his own firm, he has to hope that he will have clients to keep his business going. Deciding whether to take a risk is a tough decision to make, but if your reason to take the risk is for good cause, then one should definitely take that risk.

Also, a person who wants to be an entrepreneur must be proactive. One must take the initiative by actually doing something about a certain situation rather than just sitting down on the side and not doing anything about it. For example, global warming is a huge problem around the world and a proactive person would either find a way to help prevent global warming or come up with some sort consumer good that could replace the a high pollutant such as a car. One must be constantly looking for ways to improve our way of life. That is why entrepreneurs are needed; we need to help make the world a better place.

The key thing an entrepreneur must have is passion. Passion is what motivates one to go through with something and actually cause change. Without passion, there is nothing that would motivate a person to do a certain thing. One’s passion is what drives them and helps them accomplish whatever they hope to accomplish. With that passion that one holds, they must act upon it and do something about it. Entrepreneurship is being taught in schools because the world is needing those bright individuals that can cause change, so make your mark in this world.

Diversity

Diversity in college is what makes the college experience even better. Without diversity, people would not be open to people from different backgrounds or cultures due to the lack of communicating with anyone that is different from them. Ernest Pascarella wrote a journal article on how diversity affects students in college and he stated in the article that students “demonstrate statistically significant shifts in the direction of greater social, racial, ethnic, and political tolerance and greater support for individual rights.” Diversity promotes different point of views, better social skills, and tolerance for other people among college students.

Those student that are open to communicate with people with different aspects of life gain knowledge from those students and acquire different point of views. A student who might be Christian might meet someone that belongs to the Buddhism religion and get to learn about that specific religion. They may not have the same opinion, but at least the student is open to hearing the other student. Getting to know people from diverse places enables students to have a better view of the world and not necessarily generalize people by the way they look.

Also, communicating with people that come from different origins allows students to have better social skills. Students learn that people act differently to certain situations and that almost everyone will have a different outlook. When talking to more people, students start to feel more comfortable speaking to different people. Also, this could give students the confidence that they needed to be able to speak to others. There is nothing wrong speaking to someone that is different from you, people need to be more open and communicate with everyone.

To conclude, having a diverse college builds student’s tolerance for other college students. For example, a student might get irritated easily when it comes to a certain topic, but when conversing with other students with different point of views, they can see that they don’t always have the answer. Also, students are more open to people from different backgrounds and that builds their tolerance for all sorts of different people. The world today is extremely diverse; students need to get accustomed to dealing with people that are different from them.

ASU Libraries

Everyone should know that not every person can be trusted. Especially when it comes to being on the internet. The internet is a place where people can go to find the latest news, articles on specific information, and about everything else one can think of. Also, anyone is able to make a website and that is where the problem comes in. Robert Harris, a writer and educator for over five years says that “unlike most traditional information media, no one has to approve the content before it is made public.” Anyone can post pretty much anything on the web and its accuracy on a topic can be very questionable. Instead of relying on search engines to find information, students should visit a library instead. I library offers students scholarly articles, research databases, and books that could assist them on their topic.

Libraries have scholarly articles that can be great sources when it comes to writing a paper. Scholarly articles are articles that are written by professors, doctors, psychologists, anyone who has a well respected position in the job world. When an article is written, it must go to a committee of men/women so it can be revised and changed. The writer then gets the article back to make the correct changes so it pleases everyone in the committee. If someone has to go through all that trouble just to get an article published, one knows that the information in that article is reliable. The scholarly articles were not written so that they can make a library look nice and pretty, they were written so that they can be read and used. Please stop relying on the internet so much and go read something that is actually true.

Also, another resource that students can use at their local library are the research databases. The research databases are very useful because it is jammed packed with articles, journals, and magazines. All of which your professor might recommend to use. At ASU, for instance, a student can go to any of the eight libraries and search the databases. The ASU libraries have 400 databases and you can find and reserve a book or article online if the library you are currently at doesn’t have it. Plus, a research database makes it extremely easy for a student to find exactly what they are looking for.

Lastly, students can do it the old fashioned way and actually use a book for a resource. Books are always avoided by students because they can be so lengthy and boring, but books is what got it all started. Books are very reliable when it comes to using them for a paper. Even though books are a little lengthy, they provide great information and the student learns in detail about whatever topic they are studying up on. One can not lose when it comes to using a libraries resources, one can only achieve success.

Academic Integrity

When people are young, they learn that sometimes they can get avoid or escape a situation with a couple of lies. Even though that is true in certain cases, it does not apply here at the Arizona State University. Everyone that is enrolled in college is an adult and must learn that you can’t always get the easy way out. And it is upsetting how many learn the hard way. Teresa L. Hall, Director of Student Activities of the Towson University in Maryland states, “acts of academic dishonesty occur in environments marked by competing and sometimes conflicting values and desires.” What Teresa is basically saying is that students are more likely to commit academic dishonesty in certain situations. Although it can be difficult to abide by the school policy, one must find ways to fight the urge to cheat.

One way that would help students not commit academic dishonesty is to start thinking about the consequences. For instance, if someone has a five page essay due the next morning and is starting to think about taking someone else’s ideas, they must think of what would happen to them if they were caught. Getting caught with plagiarism can result in failing the assignment, getting dropped from the class, or even getting kicked out of college. So would it really be worth it to cheat just a little? Think about the future because one little mistake like plagiarizing can affect you for the rest of your life.

Another thing a student could do is to prioritize all of their assignments. One must keep organized to be able to know what assignment is due for what class and they must also know what assignment would be more beneficial to their grade. I am not necessarily saying that one should only do the most important assignments; I am only saying that things come up and it could be rather difficult to get all assignments done on time. For example, if a research paper that is due the next day for your psychology class that is worth forty percent of your final grade and you also have a math assignment due that is only worth 15 points, maybe it would be wise to focus more on the research paper. One must distinguish what assignment would be more beneficiary to them when they are in a tough situation.

Academic Integrity is all about will power. If a student has a clean conscience and wants to do the right thing, then college life will be a piece of cake. Everyone encounters tough obstacles in their lifetime, but that does not give anyone the right to cheat on any assignment or test. If you are ever in that type of situation, just remember to prioritize and remember what the consequences would be for your actions.

Succeeding at ASU

Success can come in many different ways, but when it comes to succeeding at ASU, one must have good time management skills, take responsibility for their education, and actually go to class. Briley E. Proctor, an Associate Professor of Educational Psychology and Learning Systems states that, “There are clear differences in study skills among students,” therefore every student needs to find a way that can help them perform well in college. One must take charge and get away from the habit of blaming everyone else for their mistakes. Take the initiative and prepare yourself to acquire different habits while at ASU

One major key to success is to acquire good time management skills. Students at ASU have to learn how to plan out their schedules so that they give themselves enough time to do whatever they have to do. When planning your class schedule, look at all the time slots available for your classes and see which one would fit you best. For instance, if you know that you have a hard time getting up in the morning, don’t schedule yourself to have a class that starts at 7:30 AM. Also, the majority of college students go to work while attending college and that can sometimes be a problem. If you are one of these students, schedule your classes around your work schedule and give yourself time for school. One can do that by working less and dedicating that time to studying or to finish an assignment that is due the next day. Besides school and work, one must give themselves time to be able to with family and friends. Yes, college can be stressing sometimes and that is why you need to give yourself time to relax. Not having a good sense of time management can prove devastating if you don’t plan carefully.

Another thing that will help a student be successful at ASU is to take responsibility for their own education. If a student is encountering problems with a certain professor because they can’t seem to understand them or their method of teaching, the student always has options. For example, a student could drop out of the class and enroll in a class with a different professor or they can talk to the professor and a figure out a method so that they can perform well in that class. Also, instead of going out to party for the night when you know you have a big exam the next day, one should decide to stay home and study for the big test. In college, everyone is on their own, and they must find ways to get through it to be a successful student.

Lastly, one of the best things a student could do to be successful is to show up to class. If a student doesn’t show up to class in the first place, how do they expect to get good grades? Everyone encounters problems in their lives and unexpected emergencies. If one of these were to happen to you, you could always email the professor letting them what happened or you could always have a friend in the classroom let you know what you missed. Other than that, there should be no excuses to why you missed class.

Having good time management skills, taking responsibility for your education, and going to class is what students at ASU need to do to become successful students. Without these, it will become extremely difficult and unbearable to the point where one starts to think about dropping out of school. Just acquire these handy tools and you will be well off on your way.
